MENU
I hate poems about making poetry. That’s like being served the menu instead of the meal you ordered.

PATTERN
A poem lives by putting a reader on a certain metric pattern, without him knowing this.

STANDARD
My standards for what poetry is, for what poetry should be, are: the poet has something to say; he has mastered his language; he is musically gifted; he is serious.

ROUNDABOUT
Whenever the day is dull and the rain is falling and the feet of the heron are battering against my window, and whenever the Garnetts (who are a literary family) or the gannets (who I believe are a bird) are gossiping in the bay, then what do I do but count my beads and then: a volume of American verse edited by Oscar Williams! I suddenly have the death wish, which is what I started with. And then I have to read the poetry again and then I like it. And then it all begins again: the melancholy, gay, euphoric roundabout.

SKIN
Just like a person is more than his skin, but wouldn't be without skin, a poem is more than its form, while it nevertheless only became a poem in and through its form, and independant on it.

LAUTREAMONT
‘Les chants de Maldoror’ by Lautreamont has also been very important to me. But I never managed to finish the book. Every now and then I had to stop because I found it so beautiful.
